Fundamentals for Neuro Practice

Across this month the linked modules will provide cornerstone foundations for working in the neurological space. We begin by covering neuroplasticity which underpins much of our clinical practice and apply this knowledge into the practical clinical setting. We then move into addressing how to conduct an effective assessment with your patients. Bringing assessment skills and understanding of neuroplasticity in practice together will enhance your ability to be confident in your prescriptions to your patients, not just for an individual exercise but also for their planned block of therapy taking into account duration and intensity of what is required. We will also explore spasticity and how to consider the impact and implications of a spasticity presentation on your patients function and needs. In the last part of this months modules we delve more closely into assessment and consideration of upper limb presentations as part of being confident in a comprehensive neurological assessment.

Neuroplasticity in Practice

Presenter: Melissa McConaghy
Description: As new graduate physiotherapists, you may already understand the theory behind neuroplasticity and why its promotion is essential for optimising a person’s rehabilitation, but how do we go about applying this in clinical practice? In this presentation, you will learn the key components of neuroplasticity in practice – intensity, specificity, salience and complexity – and understand how to embed these into the exercises you prescribe, the education you provide, and the language you use as a therapist.

Physiotherapy assessment of the neurological patient – putting theory into practice

Presenter: Anna Jones
Description: We recognise that on graduating many students will have learnt the theory of different components of assessment or may have had experience in some areas of physiotherapy for performing assessment but confidence for structuring an effecting neuro assessment can be daunting. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of how to approach your neuro physio assessment in the context of real clinical working. We aim to give you the skills to step confidently into your assessments and gain both the information you need and your patients trust.
